Stories like these break our hearts and stitch them back together in one go. It's always gut-wrenching to hear of kittens being abandoned - especially in places as terrifying as the middle of a busy road. But somehow, the Cat Distribution System knew exactly what it was doing.

One brave, soft-hearted husband pulled off a daring rescue, and now this tiny 4-week-old survivor has a second chance at life. It's beyond lucky - it's fate with whiskers. There's something incredibly moving about the moment tragedy turns into joy, when an unwanted kitten becomes the center of a family's universe. We're just relieved this little one wasn't hit, and that she found her way into the arms of people who truly care. A warm, cat-expurrienced home is exactly where she belongs - and it's no coincidence that the very person who swore "no more cats" is now her biggest champion.

The world can be a tough place for wild kittens - to defend themselves, hunt for themselves, face the hard conditions of life alone. Not everyone gets the same start in life, but that doesn't mean that they don't deserve a real chance. That's when we come in - kind humans who want to help. Neither one of the cute bobcat kittens in this story would have been able to survive in the wild on its own, but luckily, they were found in time, and their caretakers realized that their best chance is with each other.

One of the bobcat kittens was kept as a pet illegally and rescued. The other bobcat kitten was found sick and injured and rescued. And when paired together, the two of them formed an instant bond, a friendship that not only eased their loneliness after their already-tough short lives but also allowed them to sharpen their instincts and prepare them for release back into the wild.

The Lady Gets Lucky

The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe is $1.99! This was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet and is the second book in the Fifth Avenue Rebels. For the most part, I love Shupe’s pairings, but a lot of the secondary characters, usually parents, are just awful people and can make for a frustrating read.

Following The Heiress Hunt, beloved author Joanna Shupe continues her new Fifth Avenue Rebels series with a scandalous romance about a good girl desperate to rebel and the rebel desperate to corrupt her.

A first-rate scoundrel.

A desperate wallflower.

Lessons in seduction.

The woman no one notices . . .

Shy heiress Alice Lusk is tired of being overlooked by every bachelor. Something has to change, else she’ll be forced to marry a man whose only desire is her fortune. She needs to become a siren, a woman who causes a man’s blood to run hot . . .and she’s just met the perfect rogue to help teach her.

He’s the life of every party . . .

Christopher “Kit” Ward plans to open a not-so-reputable supper club in New York City, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to hire the best chef in the city to guarantee its success. Even if it requires giving carnal lessons to a serious-minded spinster who has an in with the chef.

Their bedroom instruction grows passionate, and Alice is a much better pupil than Kit had ever anticipated. When the Society gentlemen start to take notice, Kit has to try to win Alice in other ways . . . but is he too late to win her heart?

Collide

Collide by Bal Khabra is $1.99! This is the first book in a New Adult series with hockey player heroes. I think this was originally self-pubbed and got popular on BookTok before being picked up by Berkley, but I’m not 100% confident in that.

She’s an honors student with ambitious graduate school plans and he’s a jock with only hockey on his mind, but once their worlds collide, their connection is hot enough to melt an ice rink.

An ultimatum from Summer Preston’s thesis advisor thrusts her into an unexpected collision with the hockey team’s captain, Aiden Crawford. She’s caught between conflicting desires of fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a sport psychologist and staying as far away as possible from the god-awful sport. And once she meets Aiden—well, let’s just say he confirms all her worst assumptions about hockey players.

Being the captain of the college hockey team has its perks, except when a reckless mistake by Aiden’s team threatens to jeopardize their entire season. As punishment, Aiden’s coach nominates him as the subject of a student research project. Participating is the last thing he wants to do, especially since the girl leading the project looks like she could wield his skates as a weapon.

Summer can’t stand Aiden’s blasé approach to life, and Aiden doesn’t understand why she’s twenty years old with a twenty-five-year plan. But their bickering soon turns to bantering—and once they let their guards down, there’s nothing to check their feelings.

Damned If I Duke

Damned If I Duke by Anna Bradley is $2.99! This is book two in the Drop Dead Dukes series and features a marriage of convenience.

Bold and adventurous, Prudence Thorne is not the kind of woman to stand by meekly when someone she loves has been wronged. And she’s quite certain that Jasper Vincent, Duke of Montford, somehow duped her father into racking up enormous gambling debts. When fate offers her a chance to blackmail Jasper into forgiving her father’s losses, she seizes it . . . only to have her scheme backfire.

Jasper enjoys London’s illicit delights too much to wed. Too bad his grandfather has decided that a woman with the nerve to blackmail might be exactly the sort of wife to tame him. Pressed into a marriage neither wanted—and fighting a desire neither expected—Prue and Jasper torment and tempt each other beyond reason.

Surely a proper duchess should be subdued, obedient, and dignified? Yet just as he begins to get his wish, Jasper realizes how much he wants his unconventional wife—and only her—if it’s not too late to win her . . .

Colton Gentry’s Third Act

Colton Gentry’s Third Act by Jeff Zentner is $2.99! I mentioned this one in a previous Get Rec’d. This one seems like it’ll pack an emotional punch.

“A story of love, healing, and second chances ” (Emily Henry) following a down on his luck country musician who, in the throes of grief after a shocking loss, moves back home and rekindles a relationship with his high school sweetheart, from award-winning author Jeff Zentner.

Colton Gentry is riding high. His first hit in nearly a decade has caught fire, he’s opening for country megastar Brant Lucas, and he’s married to one of the hottest acts in the country. But he’s hurting. Only a few weeks earlier, his best friend, Duane, was murdered onstage by a mass shooter at a country music festival. One night, with his trauma festering and Jim Beam flowing through his veins, Colton stands before a sold-out arena crowd of country music fans and offers his unfiltered opinion on guns. It goes over poorly.

Immediately, his career and marriage implode. Left with few choices or funds, he retreats to his rural Kentucky hometown. He’s resigned himself to has-been-dom, until a chance encounter at his town’s new farm-to-table restaurant gives him a second shot at a job working in the kitchen with Luann, his first love, who has undergone her own reinvention. Told through perspectives alternating between his senior year of high school, his time coming up with Duane as hungry musicians in Nashville, and the present, COLTON GENTRY’S THIRD ACT is a story of coming home, undoing past heartbreaks, and navigating grief, and is a reminder that there are next acts in life, no matter how unlikely they may seem.

The Rec League: Alternate History

The Rec League - heart shaped chocolate resting on the edge of a very old bookThis Rec League was sent in by Anne:

I’ve been re-reading Susanna Kearsley’s books about the Jacobites was reminded about how very unlucky the Stuarts were in their efforts to regain the throne in England. I am interested in books about what might have happened in the Stuarts were successful or if Queen Anne had named her half-brother as her successor instead of her German cousin.

On a similar note, I’m also interested in books that are based on the premise that Napoleon was not defeated and didn’t abdicate as Emperor.

Sarah: Ooof I have been THINKING on this one. The first alt history that comes to mind is this one: A Queen from the North.

Reimagining if the war of the roses hadn’t ended

Kearsley I often recommend with Nicola Cornick, but I don’t think Cornick has done books with those premises.

Claudia: I can only think of “steampunk” sort of settings, not quite alt history.

Are there any alt history recs you’d add to the list? Let us know in the comments!

Adopting a sick cat is one of the kindest things that you can do. Their life is hard, they need help, and really, as people who love cats, there is nothing that we find more incredible than seeing a stray cat get adopted and spoiled the way that they deserve to be. So, when this person adopted a cat that they thought was sick with worms, they did something amazing, they just didn't know that they cat had an even more amazing surprise in the making. Or three surprises.

Because this cat wasn't sick, not at all. This cat was actually pregnant, and it only took her a few days - a few days or true comfort and care - to feel comfortable enough to let those babies out. Literally. Before these people knew what happened, they had an adorable litter of wiggly kittens to take care of. But at least it looks like all four of them are purrfectly healthy.

There are many things that one might consider to be 'classically cat'. You have hissing, staring into blank space as if there is something there, sitting with their jaw slack and letting their tongue slide out.

But one quality certainly jumps out amongst the rest, and that is the quality we have based this list on today. It is of course their penchant for climbing curtains and sitting atop their rod to survey the kingdom over which they rule. Which means that without meaning to us hoomans have provided them with the purrfect red carpet equivalent leading tot their royal perch. Just one more of the many ways in which just by living a hooman life we are providing play opportunities for our cat children. May their silly antics and wild tendencies give us the hilarious moments they create for many more millennia. And if you are still hankering for more feline tomfoolery, then check out this list of culinary cattos.

Cats are silly animals. They're so cute and fluffy, adorable and innocent, yet cunning and protective of themselves. Dogs are like an open book: they wag their tails at anyone, they want to be pet by anyone. Meanwhile you'd be lucky if you got a cat to let you pet them anywhere. When people come over to my place, they always comment on how "dog-like" my cat is, how he lets me pet his belly all over, kiss his stomach, and play with him like I would a dog. Most cats would rip your eyes out for trying to touch their stomach. I guess my cat is just special, but that doesn't mean he's not introverted in his own way.

Dogs are an open book, extroverts by nature. Cats? Cats could be all alone forever and probably never notice that they're even alone. They love their solitude. Even in their attachments to their owner and silly play time with their string toy, they're totally introverts. Even my little kitty likes to sleep alone! I feel blessed when I get a night with him, because usually he goes to the couch at bedtime. Enjoy these cute cat memes.

Not everyone gets a second chance, especially senior animals in shelters. Older animals just don't get the same amount of adoptions as younger pets, like puppies and kittens. There are many different reasons, but when it comes down to it, don't they deserve love and a furever family too? One cat loving lady is showing the world that you shouldn't over look the senior cats with her 16-year-old crust ball, Nuji.

When she got this little guy, he had been in the shelter a very long time and was constantly overlooked because he had a lot of visible "old man" issues. He didn't move too well and his floof had less of a bounce. Well, that's because in cat years he is an 80-year-old man! That's a long life lived for anyone, especially a cat! The sweet feline was immediately grateful for the second chance at life and constantly shows it with nudges of love to his rescuer. Nuji was thought to have maybe three months left in him, and now they have recently celebrated his 10 month adoptiversary!

It's Wednesday. The purrgatory of the week and we're all just trying to claw our way to the weekend. Monday was a mess, Tuesday zoomed by like a cat on midnight zoomies, and now we're here, stuck in the middle like a loaf on the couch, questioning every life choice that led to this inbox full of chaos. Your coffee's cold, your brain's buffering, and honestly, that third snack of the day? Absolutely counts as self-care. We're not meowchines, okay?

But hang in there, furiends. The weekend is on the horizon, and you've made it this far without knocking a single thing off the desk in protest (or maybe you have, no judgment). The days ahead are full of pawsibilities, naps, and hopefully sushi you don't have to share with your cat. So stretch out, channel your inner loaf, and power through. You've got this. Just a few more days 'til you're living your best weekend life! Napping in the sun, snacks within paw's reach, and not a Zoom meeting in sight.

Not all cat rescues have the sweetest beginnings to them, and this story is most certainly one of those. The cruelty of hoomans is something that truly astounds the mind and makes the soul wretch, but as callous as some hoomans can be, others are just as benevolent and kind, if not more. And thankfully that was the nature of our heroic rescuer who innocently took her bins out one day and discovered that there was far more than trash knocking around the communal trash cans.

The rest of the story we will not spoil for you, as it is well worth the read, but we will say that this serves as a reminder that the Cat Distribution System works in many ways. And those who think that it only delivers fresh felines who are ready to take on their new life with all four paws, are sorely mistaken. But much like the deities that so many pray to, the Cat Distribution System will never give you more than you can handle. You just have to trust in the process.

How many hours a day do we spend on our phones? It can be terrifying to check our digital well-being as part of our phone settings and see that we've spent 8 hours just on our phones alone! It doesn't even  include being on a computer or laptop. But does it mean it's bad? Maybe, it depends on you. Everyone has their own thing they love to scroll through. Maybe it's old photos of people you went to high school with, judging their life trajectories, changing appearances, and what they're doing in life these days. Maybe you love to scroll classical art memes and think back to love's lost and found, about the entire landscape of your relationship history. Maybe you love to watch endless reels about the most random day-to-day things that make you crack up at the connections between us all. And maybe, just maybe, you love cats.

Who doesn't love cats? Seriously, they're adorable, furry, and innocent. Anyone who says different might identify as a dog person (but they secretly like cats). Enjoy these adorable and wholesome cats in cuddle puddles of cuteness.

Who has not walked past an abandoned alley or house that is obviously full of cats and thought to themselves about rescuing one, or all, of the feline souls who are subjected to living the harsh life of the streets? Well, today's story comes from one of those people who decided they would go ahead and do it after noticing that one of the stray cats took a particular interest in them.

An action of the Cat Distribution System, or simply the cat's choice? We will never know, but one way or another it seems that these two were fated to be together as this cat who turned out to be a cat momma quickly changed her street themed tune and began to trust her new hoomans with her freshly delivered litter. This is a story of wholesome connection between hoomans and cats. This is a story of new beginnings. This is a story that might make you run out the door and go looking for a neighborhood cat to save…

It's the middle of the week, the to-do list isn't getting any shorter, and your energy levels are somewhere between "catatonic" and "please no more emails". But before you collapse face-first onto your keyboard, may we offer you something far superior: cats. More specifically - cats in meme form. Because while Wednesdays are known for their chaos, cats are known for their calming, cuddly, and often completely chaotic charm. It's a perfect balance, really.

Cats have this unmatched ability to be both elegant and unhinged at the same time. One moment, they're stretching like regal lions on sunlit windowsills. The next, they're zooming across the room as if chased by invisible demons. They nap for 16 hours a day and still manage to act exhausted. They knock over your water glass with purpose and stare you down like you were the one who messed up. And we wouldn't have them any other way. That's why cat memes are the ultimate midweek antidote - equal parts wholesome, hilarious, and unhinged.

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back to Wednesday Links! (Is it Wednesday?)

To be frank, I’m damn exhausted. I’ve been so tired lately. Can we get to fall yet? I find the crisp New England air to be energizing.

On Friday mornings, a friend and I have a Zoom writing sesh for an hour. it’s been going well and I’ve been working on a fantasy romance. However, yesterday I was hit with a new idea for something contemporary and I can’t stop thinking about it. I may switch gears.

I was telling my partner that fantasy writing takes some extra brain power if you’re creating a completely fictional world. Naming things is the bane of my existence. And right now, I don’t have a ton of brain power to spare.

If you have any helpful tips and tricks for naming things, I’m all ears!

So many of you sent us the Fabio flowchart. Sarah and I had a good time keeping track of all the emails that came in. You can find the flowchart at #15 on this list from Ask A Manager.

Harper’s Bazaar has a piece on how audiences don’t want romcoms, they want romantic horror. It’s an interesting opinion, but one I don’t agree with fully. I don’t think the audiences have shifted. People still want romcoms. It’s just that media companies (and I’m including publishing here) do not seem to know what a romcom is and the label has diluted so much that it means nothing. In my humble opinion.

This link comes from Kim D., who shared this interview with a cover model, who retired in 2019, on how he preps for a cover shoot.

From Kael: I thought you all might like to know she got a mention in the new Princess Weekes video on Enemies to Lovers! (the exact timestamp is 23:15, it’s about Sarah’sresponse to For Such A Time)

It’s a super interesting watch and would definitely recommend it to the folks here who don’t mind a crunchy conversation.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Unfurtunately for us, we've only ever found and adopted one "feral" kitten in our lives as feline fans. This happened when we were still young, our parents took us to the movies and as we were walking back to the car, we heard some teeny tiny meows coming from behind a dumpster on the way to the parking lot. We asked our parents if we could keep her (they couldn't say no), and we named her 'Meow'. Cut us some slack, we were about four years old!

Just like the kitten in this post, Meow was "feral" no longer as soon as she stomped right into our house. She immediately took a liking to our doggos and was the sweetest cat we ever could have asked for. She would curl up in our laps and sleep while we watched movies together as one big family.

Basically, what we're saying is that you should take a chance on the wild ones. They're usually the biggest snuggle bugs as soon as they learn to trust you.
