I'm glad you wrote this, and I agree. I also see among some folks in my community (I'm heathen in the Bay Area) a tendency for folks to not want to bother with the "hard part" of having regular faith practices or studying the lore and learning the mythology and stories (b/c obviously the only thing you need to do to be heathen is drink a bunch of mead and yell Hail Odin a few times... *insert rolled eyes here*). Then they complain when they feel like the Gods aren't paying attention to them, that they're not feeling the presence of Spirit in their lives (I'm complaining - I've had this conversation several times in the past few months). Spirituality can be whatever you make of it, and it's not my job to tell folks what to do (unless they ask). But it's important to set one's expectations based on one's willingness to do the work, and not expect outcomes without some kind of (semi-regular) effort.

At the risk of being totally crude, it reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend years ago who was complaining about a friend of his who was whining about not having a girlfriend. My friend R's colorful commentary on his friend was that if all his friend was going to do all day was sit around and hide from the world playing computer games, he shouldn't expect a woman to materialize out of thin air in his basement and trip and fall on his... (let's insert the word "lap" here, shall we?). Spirituality, and connection to whatever one's version of divinity/Spirit/connection is kinda like that.
